Different water systems to use for poultry exist. Two main systems, which can be used.
- Open systems that consist of drinking towers with open access for poultry
- Closed systems; where individual drinking spots (nipples) are mounted on a closed distribution line. An alternative nipple system has a cup system underneath the nipple.
Both systems have benefits and disadvantages with regard to contamination of the drinking water of poultry.
In both cases the main supply chain inside the house can be contaminated and growout of bacteria can occur. Water systems are frequently uses to supply medication to the animals. Afterwards the system should be cleaned, since residues may enable growth of micro-organisms.
