The use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) and genetically modified micro-organisms (GMM’s) as ingredients are consedered as a risk for food safety. GMO’s and GMM’s can be defined as organisms (and micro-organisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been modified artificially. The technology is often called  biotechnology, or gene technology, sometimes also “recombinant DNA technology” or "genetic engineering". It allows the selection of individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another, also between non-related species.
In September 2004 the European Union has decided that the use of GMO’s in animal feed form a risk for the safety of food for humans. However it should be noted that this has not yet been proven scientifically.

In 2010 Europe formed an international network on GMO.
