Transport from farm to farm

The transportation of poultry, include poultry that goes from rearing farms, to egg- or hatching egg production farms. Broilers are rarely transported from one farm to another.

Within a farm reared animals are usually transported by open trucks over a short distance. Over longer distances poultry is transported in either plastic crates or metal containers in well designed and preferably climatized trucks.
The advantage of the plastic or metal crates is that they have a longer life span, which may be more susceptible to contaminants, but on the other hand they can be disinfected easily.

Transporting poultry with open trucks has the disadvantage that the animals are in direct contact with air and dust, and thus bacteria, infections and diseases.
