Transportation of live animalsTransportation of live animals introduces the risk of infection. The main means of transportation is by a truck. Other forms of transportation are by aeroplane, train motorcycle, bike, ship or foot. Trucks for animal transport need special design with respect to ventilation, wind shields and cleanability. These trucks are designed to minimise the discomfort of the chickens and to make sure the chickens are not exposed to risks that could influence food safety such as: contact with chickens from other farms, faeces, dirty trucks (growth of bacteria), and human contact.
There are three types of transportation when moving live animals:
• Transportation of one day old chicks from hatchery to farm
• Transportation of poultry to slaughterhouse
• Transportation of poultry from farm to farm
Each type of transportation should be carried out while taking measures to prevent cross contamination and other risks regarding food safety and animal welfare: Trucks should be built in such a manner that they can be disinfected fast and efficiently (HACCP guidelines).
In some countries chickens are transported not only by truck, but by any means of transportation available that includes higher risks of contaminaiton.
